Abbey Veterinary Group is a multi-site practice (eight sites, per its website) offering routine care alongside a stated 24-hour emergency service. The clinic describes services such as vaccinations, surgical treatment, microchipping, nurse clinics, alternative therapy, and pet insurance advice, and it lists care for a range of species including cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, and tortoises.
Recent reviews paint a mixed picture: some owners describe urgent/same-day help with follow-up contact (for example, nail injury treated quickly with next-day surgery and updates by phone), while others report serious concerns about clinical decisions and aftercare (including alleged misdiagnosis, pets being discharged when owners felt they were still unwell, and post-op hygiene issues).

Took our third cat, Cookie, to get her first vaccination and the whole process felt really rushed. I get it being busy but instead of offering our cat a terrible experience rebook it! The vet didn’t show any compassion to the little kitten as she injected her microchipped and caused lots of pain. Followed by the her first vaccine which was done in even more pain!!! Our cat was a little angel till yesterday and now she’s all afraid of being picked up any more and hides away. Really wish we went to the other Abbey vets practice as we had a much more pleasant experience there…

Miss diagnosis neglect and shocking duty of care by all staff at Dodworth Road branch that was involved in the treatment of our beloved golden retriever that we sadly had to say goodbye to my partner rang the vets to request a emergency appointment were we waited in the car park and then meet by 3 vets with a towel to carry her inside and then waited a further 10-15 minutes in the waiting room shortly after the vet was making her checks with our dog was told there was no broken bones to her back legs and no dislocation the vet then proceeded to work out the costing of the further treatment I was pressured in to the payment of £600 that was compulsory before any treatment was carried out our dog she was then discharged 3 hours later given 2 strips of tablets and a small bottle of oral medication for us to take home I have never been previously asked to make payments upfront for any treatment for any of my 3 dogs at any of the abbey branches since we registered with them 5 years ago we took her home with the advice of us to rest her and keep a eye on her with Evan though she had no used and any feeling of her back legs and no feeling or use of her bladder which later caused her to be in server pain and discomfort due to her continuing to drinks water and not been able to urinate in the consultation nothing was mentioned regarding monitoring her urinating activity after 36 hours and ever concerned and no sign of fluid passing we contacted the vet for the second time to seek further advice we’re we was told we would need to bring her down for a further consultation at a further cost in the second consultation we was told daisy’s may have nerve damages to her spine And rear end that was connected to her bladder making her unable to relieve her self when she in need to have a wee and there would be a slim chance of her making a full recovery as the second diagnosis was different to the first vet being a loving owner and not wanting to admit defeat for our dog I made the decision that I would like a second opinion from another veterinary practice and the lack of confidence I had with abbey vets diagnosis daisy was sent home distressed and clearly in discomfort and in pain with a full and continuing expanding bladder now a noticeable size of a small football no mention of the possibility of draining any fluids from her to make her more comfortable my self and my partner carried her out to the car that evening daisy’s discomfort and pain continued to escalate the following morning we took her to see another vet we’re he instantly diagnosed her to have arthritis and neurological nerve damage causing her to have no control of her back end he advised us the kindest thing to do was sadly put our beloved dog to sleep he made it quite clear daisy’s should not of been sent home after her first appointment at abbey vet she should of kept in under observation over night at least , the same afternoon we made the tough decisions to have our dog put to sleep to end her suffering , please don’t use abbey vets the have no interest in your pets well being and welfare all they are interested in is money money money my partner and I are absolutely discussed in the level of service received

Our family dog was registered here and due to neglect we later lost this dog. He was the heart and soul of the house and family and upon being seen by one of the vets here, he was prescribed something which after having had a second opinion shouldn’t have been prescribed without a proper examination. We were informed by this second opinion that a build up of black wax limits how far in the ear you can go and that in order to have seen whether the infection was deep in ear, the dog would have to be put under sedation. But because our dog deteriorated badly and suddenly this couldn’t happen. To which the second opinion vets took care of our dog as best they could and told us that toxins had leaked into his brain from medication he was given. We lost our dog that night when he was given anti sickness, anti-seizure medication and antibiotics by this amazing second opinion vet (not abbey vets) he was finally out of pain and sleeping soundly. If our dog was checked properly and given the right treatment at the right time he may still be here. For this reason we have unregistered all other family pets from this branch. He was just 5 years old!

Debbie receptionists at barnsley branch was rude to me when I rang this week to book my dog in for vaccination booster and check up. I was lovely on phone to her just wanting to book an appointment and got attitude and rudeness its not on. I rang after 8:30 and got Cudworth Abbey vets and got a lovely receptionists who booked me in. Abbey vets need to train debbie on her attitude as they will loose clients and their pets. It right narked me off and its not on.

Amazing vets! Fantastic care and sound advice for my old cat. Definitely feel they have the animals best interests at heart. My cat (and me!) were very well looked after. Warm caring vets, nurses and reception staff. Amazing value for money too. Thank you to Liz and all the team that took care of my cat Ralph.

Animal Cruelty at the hands of Abbey Vets. Avoid please as I don't want your pet to suffer like my baby. I would give no stars if I could. I took my dog in to be spayed here and have a recheck on her eye. We saw a student nurse unsupervised on admission.(Didn't realize at the time though). She wasn't sure if she could be spayed today due to some reason that made no sense to me so ask if we could get a opinion for a vet. That was fine and she was admitted. I was told they would phone me and let me know how her eye was and if she could be spayed. By 12 o'clock I had heard nothing. So I phoned the vets for an update only to be told she hadn't had her eye looked at and they didn't know we had asked for a vets opinion on the spaying. The nurse I spoke to said she would phone me straight back. Well that took until 2.10pm they said there was no reason she couldn't be spayed and said they would spay her within the next hour or so. That was fine. Then when we picked her up she came out in an awful condition. Had to take to another vets after we picked her up due to her condition. She was cut badly multiple times when they shaved her, they told me it was a small nic with the shaver which was a lie. There are 3 deep cuts (not from the spaying) and 7 grazes. Totally unacceptable. Then no fuilds given at all. She was very dehydrated. They made her walk to me when she was clearly in a lot of pain. Totally refused to give me her medical records on what they had done and given her today. When we was with the different vet getting her checked over we phoned Abbey Vets to again ask what pain relief if any she had had and then got told she had had a pre med but couldn't tell us what that was. No pain relief given to come home with even when requested. I know these are needed from when my other dog was spayed at a different vets. Also at the time of booking her spayed we requested a post surgery suit this again was not given. For the checkup on her eye. The vets told us to keep giving her the eye drops she was given a week ago but the medication says disregard after 7 days of opening so that not possible. Didn't give any more. When I complained about her treatment I was told it's my fault for not requesting fuilds and her now full healed previous skin allergies is why her belly is cut and grazes to pieces and is why her tail stub has no hair but then could give a reason when I said her tail stub has never had hair as she butt rubs it after zooms and that been the case since a puppy. At the other vets was told she don't need more treatment on her eye and they said her treatment is nothing short of cruel. I obviously will be report this to the RCVS. Please don't take your pets here. Also do your research on there price as for the eye drops she was given on a previous visit they charged 5 times as much as you could buy them over the counter for without a prescription. All about the money and no care.

I can’t thank Abbey Vets enough for the care and attention they have provided for my previous pets and my rescue dog, who has recently been treated for his allergies. He’s extremely nervous and they provided a collection and drop off service for him which has helped him massively by avoiding stress in the waiting area and the journeys to and from his appointment. The ambulance staff have both been fantastic with him, and the vet Tom couldn’t have been kinder and more supportive to his needs. I actually think Ben has enjoyed his vets visits! Thanks to all of you so much for the incredible service you provide for our loved animals.

I have had my gorgeous Cockapoo puppy Sunny to Abbey Vets at Barnsley today to be speyed. I collected her at 3:30pm this afternoon and brought her home distraught as she was covered in poo. I picked her up to put her in the car and thought she was a little dirty, but when we got her home. She was covered in it. The car was covered, her basket is now covered in it. When speaking to Abbey. They offered an apology but no explanation, as the head nurse had left for the day. They claim to care, I am not sure they do.
